LONDON'S SHOPS
TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD
Running up from New Oxford Street to Euston Road, Tottenham Court Road was once thought of as the furniture centre for London. Today it is predominantly known for its hi-fi and electrical equipment shops such as the many branches of Lasky and Lion House, which has a hi-fi department store on the corner of Store Street. There are still, however, a number of good furnishing stores, the largest being Heal & Son Ltd.
Newer and smaller, but no less striking, is Habitat, whose popular furniture and furnishings are of a modern design. Other interesting shops on Tottenham Court Road are Paperchase, which has a unique range of cards, posters, wrapping paper and other stationery, and The Reject Shop which stocks a wide range of seconds in pottery and household goods.
EDGWARE ROAD
Shops here, such as Henry's Radio, stock a wide range of electrical and electronic goods, from tiny components and kits to complete equipment.
CHARING CROSS ROAD
Charing Cross Road is at the southern end of Tottenham Court Road and is the home of a great variety of new and second-hand bookshops as well as shops selling music and musical instruments. Of the bookshops, Foyles must be the most famous, and Macari's and Scarth are two of the many shops stocking musical instruments, though these days most of their trade is in guitars, electric keyboards, and amplifiers. Shaftesbury Avenue, which crosses Charing Cross Road at Cambridge Circus, also has many music shops.
KNIGHTSBRIDGE
Though the Knightsbridge, Brompton Road and Sloane Street area has some of the most luxurious fashion boutiques, antique shops and department stores in London, they all tend to be overshadowed by the magnificence of Harrods, the largest department sore in Europe. The legend of Harrods is that it sells everything - from fresh octopus to travelling rowing machines, from alabaster bathtubs to gold-plated xylophones. Equally notable, but not as comprehensive, is the Harvey Nichols department store in Sloane Street. It is a luxurious store particularly noted for women's and children's wear as well as all kinds of furniture and furnishings. Also popular is The Scott House, which specialises in Scottish woollens, knitwear, and woven tartans.
KENSINGTON HIGH STREET
At the western end of Hyde Park, the two roads of Kensington High Street and Kensington Church Street make up this lively and fashionable off-centre shopping area. The department store John Barker specialises in household goods. Going down Kensington High Street, chain clothing stores like C & A, Marks and Spencer, British Home Stores, and individual fashion shops such as Crocodile and Feathers mingle with supermarkets and exotic restaurants to give a unique atmosphere. Kensington Church Street is a haven antique collectors at its eastern end, and at its western end for those looking out for the most up-to-date in clothing.
CARNABY STREET AND THE KING'S ROAD
Perhaps one of the most well-known names in London, Carnaby Street is a pedestrian precinct behind Regent Street which in the 1960's had the most adventurous boutiques selling the trendiest gear in town. It still has a lively atmosphere and a number of modern men's and children's fashion boutiques, but the spirit of Carnaby Street has moved over the last few years to the King's Road in Chelsea. Along here, among some very sophisticated antique, furnishing and fashion shop are astounding eye-openers in clothes shops.
